A6 quattro wagon - 1995-1998. Would carry as much as an Allroad, just not as
fast. Won't do well on the dunes, but would be good and reasonable
everywhere else...

Land Rover Discovery - great on the dunes and in snow, mediocre everywhere
else :) 1996+

MB ML320 - same as Discovery

The two SUVs have some quality and reliability issues...Alternatives could
be used Tahoe or Suburban or LandBruiser. I just don't trust the smaller
sport Utes with regard to safety or longevity. They seem like oversized tin
cans...you also didn't mention a budget...even used, some of these could be
out of reach.
