If I'm correct, and I like to think I am, you hit it right on the money.I
would say you are suffering from a case of a dying master cylinder. I had
the same problem in my old car, which was (cough) a '77 Buick Stationwagon.
No, not an Avant! The master cylinder was failing and the brake pedal would
slowly sink to the floor when my foot was on the brake for any length of
time. As soon as I got a new master cylinder the problem was fixed.
