tranny question (89 100)

Got a problem on an 89 100 auto (surprise).  Car is leary of shifting into higher gears.  Cleaning of the governer used to cure the problem for quite some time, however, this is not working anymore.  Small non-metallic bits are cloging the prts and the amount is increasing.  Looks like a replacement is in order.  Now the question.  Will the tranny from an 86-88 5k plug and pray?
