89 200TQ setbelt will only retract

I pulled the seatbelt retractor out of my car last week and now it will
only retract
and not release.  A small metal Z piece of metal dropped off from
somewhere on the retractor and I cannot find out where this piece goes.
I had  this problem with several other seatbelts that I have pulled out
of other Audis
but nothing dropped off of them .

I wonder if anyone has run into this problem and have they solved it.  I
would appreciate
any suggestions on how to fix it.
