i'd check your ignition system out, I use a cheapo tester that has a
variable air gap and a scale to read off an approximation
of the voltage you're getting. If you haven;t got anything like that I'd
check Plug leads, Distrib. cap, rotor arm coil and ignition module (if
applicable). I have had similar symptons to yours over the years(not the
melting lead) , one time it was the ignition module steadily going west, one
time it was a coil going the same way. Ignition problems which result in a
marginal HT voltage can often seem very much like a fuel problem because
there's enough of a spark to support certain conditions e.g. idling, full
throttle but not other conditions like part throttle openings or revving. At
any rate I always check the ignition fully before suspecting something else,
its statistically the most common source of problems.
