I presume other Audis of the 90-95 vintage are the same (alarm beeps
when you lock the car with the key).

Here's a tip for those looking for such a system, or an alarm, or a
remote starter... Avital, formerly owned by Clifford, is out of business
(and so is Clifford), and you can pick up their goods for cheap on ebay.
I recommend the Hurricane 2 for an alarm, 6500/6501 for a remote
starter, or simply the Remote Access 2 for keyless entry.
