Type 44 beeps while driving

My '89 200 has taken to beeping at me while driving. 
No idiot lights that I can see are associated w/this.
  This is the long(er) high pitch beep that *I think*
is part of the autocheck system?  It's not the door
chime.
  If indeed the autocheck, I don't think mine's ever
worked correctly.  It never gives me an OK and when I
try to test the different symbols the only one I get
is the oil can symbol.  Not sure if this is relevant
or not.
  I've got a long drive home Xmas day, any thoughts
would be appreciated.  All fluid levels appear fine.
