Is this schematic showing that 87L bypasses the fuse, but could easily be
changed to run >thru< the fuse?  
I think so.

On my 86 4kq there is no fuse in the #5 fuse socket.  The sticker indicates
this fuse would only be present on 80 models with the 4 cyl engine, and
refers to Japan.  
I think the largest fuse suitable for this socket is 30 amp, and would be
inadequate for the fan, which runs thru a 40amp relay.

I could protect the fan with the type of fuse used to protect the fan on
the newer 100/200/v8 models. 
 
BTW...A similar fuse setup is found on the firewall of diesel VW Rabbits,
usually on the firewall with a 50 amp fuse.  It's in the glow plug circuit.
