Subject: Re: All Wheel Steer was Audi vs Subi
In the US, there were no models called the GTX.
For A2 Golfs, the models were the GTi and GTi 16V (Golf was not in the name,
unfortunately it meant insurance companies could charge more 'cuz the car
couldn't be hidden as a "Golf". In '87 and '88 the 8V GTi was called the
Golf GT, and for the first time the uprated "performance" Golf could be had
as a 4 dr, with the 3 sp slushbox (blech) and it didn't come with the sport
seats, "Weissach" axle or rear disk brakes. The US 16V model was intro'd
then, and the telltale sign was the Fuba powered roof antenna needed to keep
the antenna away from the ignition coil. When the "big bumper" restyle came
in '89, the 8V returned as the GTi, minus the rear disk brakes. BOTH models
got the Fuba antenna and the Quad round headlight grille. Also, at this
time, at least in outward appearance, all of the models around the world
looked the same (no longer a diff in bumper covers!). The engine for the
16V went up to the 2.0 liter, 134 HP model, and the 16V model did have rear
disks, and gained front fogs.
For the A2 Jettas they were the GLi and GLi 16V. And actually, after 1988,
there were no more 8V GLi. All 16V Jetta GLi's came with genuine (rather
than licensed copies of the manual models) Recaro power seats, the Fuba
antenna, etc. When the big bumper restyle came in, the GLi gained fogs,
retained the Jetta "aero" lights (US models suck, BTW), otherwise the
changes echo the GTi ones above.
====================HUGE snippage============
I did see one 8V GLI in Florida once. It did have the WVW VIN(Tell
tale sign of the Wolfsberg plant) and the high compression pistons, and cam.
(It was in parts) It didn't have the antenna, like mine, but everything
else was right (ie Recaro seats...)
Now you see my confusion. Some cars come from Pueblo, some from
Wolfsberg, some from both, some have everything, some have half the stuff,
some (Mine) have only the big engine but nothing else, and some have
everything but the big engine. I give up this quest for knowledge.
