Offset wheels for 87.5 CGT?

Okay, I'm going to reveal my ignorance on this one, but what is the deal with getting
wheels that are offset so that they are flush with the wheel wells? I still have the
stock wheels on my 87.5 CGT. Their okay, but I want better cornering performance...and
more natural, agile looks. I would like to put on some offset rims to "fill-out" the look
of the car. With the stock wheels, the 4K and CGT look kinda knock-kneed.

I've heard in the past that getting wheels that are more offset than factory wears out the
wheel bearings faster. Is this true? If so, it is worth it. I'd like to put 16" offset
rims with the spokes recessed a couple inches.

Are there also problems with alignment and straight line stability? Other problems?
Advantages? Advice please.

Thanks,
