V8 quattro

    I'm looking at a '91 V8 quattro (5 spd) with a broken timing belt for a 
possible purchase. The odometer displays 170,000 miles. My question(s) is 
this: when the timing belt goes on this engine does it damage both intake and 
exhaust valves or only intake? exhaust? Any speculation on how much piston 
damage I can expect to find? Also: What is the expected life span of this 
engine, if it was decently maintained during it's life? Any other input on 
this matter is welcomed. Thanks
