Wheel Spacers

Just wanted to ask everybody what your thoughts on wheel spacers are. I put 
my buddies 17x7.5 Borbet rim (ET30 Offset) on my 5KTQ and It looked awsome, 
It fit perfectly.(I have arched fenders in the rear so there is no clearance 
problem) I might buy a set of 17" Ronal Irmschers. They are 17x8 I think the 
offsey is an ET 35 or 40 so I will need spacers. I just want to know the 
pros and cons of having spacers.

p.s. Thanks to all that responded to my winter tire question, Jim, let me 
know how your wife's shadow handles in the snow with the Alpins if you can, 
thanks!
