What a windshield does cost and what it should cost are 2 different things.  
In MN they charge what the traffic will bare.  Two years ago I had the W/S 
replaced in my 200.  My insurance agent, who is a good guy and never hassles 
me, just told me to find a glass installer that I trusted, have him do it and 
send him the bill.  I called an installer recommended by the local Audi 
dealer, the guy changed it out and sent the bill directly to the insurance 
company.  About 3 months later I was talking to my agent and asked him what 
the W/S cost.  He checked into it and found they were charged $1800.  I 
remember when you could buy a new VW that that amount!
One caveat, I made sure the installer used an original German W/S not some 
junk domestic unit.  Maybe some of the other listers can provide more info on 
what does & doesn't work - I know on Porsches, domestic W/S don't fit 
correctly and should be avoided.
