My experience has been that synthetic gear oils don't make much difference for "normal"
driving. A conventional oil is perfectly fine for protecting the bearings and gears
under normal conditions. If it wasn't, engineers wouldn't spec it and your car wouldn't
come filled with it.
That said, I do believe anyone who races or puts heavy loads on the powertrain will
see some benefit to using synthetic oils. Also, I have notice improved syncro performance
on older, high mileage trannys when filled with synthetic.
