Question about '92 100

Hi!

I've been looking at a used (obviously) 1992 Audi 100, and am wondering 
whether anyone can help me with the following item:  On the center of the 
dashboard there is a large square that glows a very dim red while the car is 
running.  When the ignition is off, you can't tell that this panel is a 
light.  There is no icon or writing anywhere around this panel, and the car 
doesn't have it's owner's manual.  It's reminiscent of the alternator light 
in my Alfa which often glows faintly.  This light is located in the upper 
center area of the dash, and is approximately 1inch to 1 1/2 inches square.  
If anyone knows what this light is, and whether it's something that should 
discourage me from buying this otherwise nice car, I would greatly appreciate 
an off-digest response!
