4kq steering rack slop

hi guys..
need some wisdom again..
i have a spare rack here which has considerably less play in it than
the rack on my 4kq.. this is the up down play.. not side to side..
is there supposed to be any play whatsoever? or is a slight amount
acceptable...
i just want to do this swap while the motor and tranny r out amongst
everything else under the hood..
the rack i am planning on using is of an '84 coupe..
i believe these will interchange... correct?
i figure while i've got everything else out i might as well do the rack swap
now..

and one more question..
got a few quarts of extra mobil 1 synth ATF...
this will work fine in my p/s system.. right?
i figure if i'm going all synthentic i might as well do everything..
probably overkill but the ATF is leftover from another project...
and i didn't pay 4 it :)
