bad wheel bearing?

Yup. Humming sound should get louder when you turn AWAY from the bad
bearing, quieter when you turn towards it. Haven't heard of any grinding
either, unless the bearings are so bad that they are allowing the hub to
hit the brakes. I would think the car would be undrivable by that point
though.
