dumb question........

It has been said that the only dumb question is the one you don't 
ask, so here goes.   I decided to replace the missing AC belt on my 
89 200 Q today, but I can't see how to move the compressor enough to 
install the belt.  It appears to me that there is a bracket around 
the compressor, bolted to the block, and almost touching ths side of 
the oil pan.  I thought maybe if I removed the bar running across to 
the alternator bracket, it would do the trick, but no luck.  What am 
I missing here?  I don't want to spend all day on this, it's a little 
cold out there under the car.
