4kq running cold

I just replaced thermostat (only a year old) due to large fluctuations in
coolant temperature.
I now have fluctuations but not as great as before. I wonder if there is a
problem with the temp sensor that is causing this problem and perhaps I have
just trashed a perfectly good thermostat?
