I don't think leaving the dog at home is the answer either.  I once had that 
was a year old when I got her and we found out the hard way that she did not 
like to be left alone.  The baby sitter left her in the house while she was 
playing with the kids in the back yard and the dog jumped through a closed 
window to get out of the house.  We had her for another 14 years and she 
never really outgrew the fear of being left alone.
