Check the length of the brushes in the motor. The shunt wire from the brush
passes through a slot in the brush holder. If the wire is near the bottom of
the slot (closest to the commutator), the brush is worn out. If the shunt is
near the top of the slot, the brushes (and the motor) are new. These motors
stop running when the shunt hangs up on the bottom of the brush holder and
lifts the brush off the commutator.
