1983 5000 Turbo gas

Hello - as a newcomer to this list, I am hoping someone can help with some
questions concerning my 1983 Audi 5000 Turbo gas.  I will be glad to go to
archives and search, but did not seem to get the hang of searching (any
help about using will be appreciated).  I have the car not driving since
the litle tube coming up towards the hood started emitting hot exhaust.  I
assume this was designed as a teltale item for problem with the turbo seal.
 Have 124,000 miles on original setup.  Found prices from $900.00, to
$600.00, and now $400.00 to rebuild turbo.  But before the rebuild, I want
to be sure that is what is wrong.  All suggestions, comments, or experience
info will be appreciated.  Thanks,  Tex.
