1) Likely rear seal squeal. Does it go away when you depress the clutch?
2)Vigorous cleaning on the inside rear window has likely killed continuity
in some or all of the elements. They can be patched with conductive paint
available from the local auto parts distributor.
3)As the transmission ages, the shift linkage was designed to be adjusted to
compensate for wear. But, because it's do cussedly hard to get to, it almost
never gets adjusted. I had this same problem on my 87 5KCSTQ. I finally
discovered that if I propped one side of the socket into which the shifter
ball fits, I could fool the system into thinking that the shift linkage had
been adjusted. This compensated for the wear and made the hissing sound
disappear. You are accomplishing the same thing, though not permanently,
when you pull back on the gear lever. Try pulling off the shifter boot and
fussing with the socket into which the ball fits. Try holding it to one side
or the other while the car is in 3rd or 4th gear. I actually built a shim
out of a thin sheet of wood that canted the socket to one side, biasing its
rotation, simulating adjusting the transverse shifter connector in the
linkage. A better solution would be to replace the linkage components, but
you have to be a magician to do that with the tranny in place. Mine has been
working without the hissing for maybe 15,000 miles now with no ill effects.

Subject: 3 Questions

Hey all,

The car is a 1986 5000TQ:

1)When I turn the car on it sounds like the car literally screams!
The sound is coming from the front of the car but doesn't really
   sound like a belt slipping.

2)My rear de-fog doesn't work, the fuse is fine. haven't checked the
continuity (however you spell it) yet

3)There is a hissing noise coming from the around the gear shift lever
especially in third but if I pull back on the stick while it's in
third and hold it the sound dissapears.
                                                 Any suggestions?

My only guess for the screaming and hissing is that the car is possesed!

                                                      TIA, Nik
