Actually the Quantum; Passat Santana was meant to fit in-between the
4000S; 90 and the 5000; 100 just like today's Passat is meant to fit
in-between the A4 and the A6. Slightly bigger than the 4000; 90 and slightly
smaller than the 5000; 100.
Running gear and engine layout for the 032 Passat is very similar to
081/085 (I have yet to figure out which type it is) 90 but it is longer and
has more interior and trunk room. Front suspension is actually different as
well as I have found on both cars. All Quantum's from 85 had 5 cylinders
while all 4000 that were fwd had 4 cylinders. This is for US models only.
Vacuum hose routing for both cars are the same for 5 cylinder versions
including quattro and syncro models. They share heater valves and A/C
compressors but their receiver drier is different. It is a task finding out
which components transfer and which are different. Someone once told me the
shifting unit on the Quantum is the same as used on an Urquattro. Guess you
just have to explore on it a little bit.
Passat Santana has it's own unique body (which I love) and floor pan
so it is unique in that sense.
