I've acquired a few Dutch workshop manuals for the newer A-series cars, and 
this seems to be the general theme. "X not working: replace module Y using 
special VAG tool Z, and use the VAG XXXX to reprogram the system".

Hardly solace, I know. I feel for you, and also for q-listers ten years 
hence...
