make sure you protect your connections and make sure they're sturdy.
Usually the first thing to go in wiring is the stuff you chopped up....
tapping is caused by bad lifters. adding thicker oil will help quiet some
lifters, but usually by the time you notice them, they're already gone, and
will still be noisy w/ whatever oil or additive. that's only a temp.
solution, b/c in winter you can't use thick oil and the tapping will only
get worse. Live w/ it if it's not a big deal, but if it's really bad or you
really want to do it, then replace the lifters. You can prolly get them for
$7-9 each x 10 lifters= $80-100 w/ shipping. You need a few gaskets, but
it's not a difficult job, and all you need to do is pull the cam.
http://www.pap-parts.com/ these can get some really good prices as well as
thepartsconnection.
as far as oil, don't put additives. use a good oil and it should do its
job. Additives can break down the balance of certain chemicals that prevent
foaming and burning. I have a turbo and will only use Mobil 1, b/c it's
fully synthetic and I can get it at the store. Synthetic is really a must
for turbos, since oil is what cools the turbo which can cook conventional
oil. But Mobil 1 would be a good choice for a non-turbo as well, b/c it's
not only thicker at high temps, it's thinner at freezing temps. A system
that is lubricated 95% of the time will last longer than a system
lubricated 85% of the time. You can actually feel how easier it is to start
in cold mornings, which is good news for bearings and lifters. I don't mean
to start an oil thread, but I really think it's the best you can buy on the
street.
