'89 200-"bucking" turbo?

Hello all, we recently purchased an '89 200 Avant.
It's primarily my gf's daily driver. First off,
generally the boost gauge reads no more than .8 or .9
under any conditions. Once it read 1.1. Not sure
why? It certainly feels as though the turbo's
working, I mean the car has plenty of power for being
relatively large w/an I5, much more power than our '86
4kq.
Today my gf was heading to work in the morning. She
went to 4th to pass someone and the gauge read 1.3.
The car seemed to "buck" under load. This is the
second time it has done this, she says it feels sort
of like an automatic trans shifting up, not violent
but noticeable. But then a light flickered, she said
it read "check" w/a symbol under it. We can only
assume it is check engine? She was unable to get a
good look at the symbol before it was gone.
I have yet to be in the vehicle when this occurs but
my gf is not your average woman when it comes to cars
and I know she's not imagining this. I know the
details are vague but any suggestions/comments are
welcome.

Thanx,
Keith L.
