Tire Wheel Combo

I've gathered Facts for 4 frickin years. It doesnt work. I came up with 225's because thats what the ORIGINAL Post was for. Was 225's. YOu replied that "well, it worked on my Golf so it will work on the 5ktq) or whatever it was. No wait, that was Theron I think. Anyhow, the original post was about 225's. NOT 215's. What good does it do to say 215's will fit, he doesnt' care. He Asked about 225's.
So, with due respect, WTF are YOU talking about. I've been very nice this entire thread. Have some comon courtesy. YOu go buy some 17's and put 225/45-17's on them and mount them front and back with no rubbing and I'll shut the hell up. I've tired it, so have a few other listers. It just dont work. Where is Goggin, I'd love for him to post his experiences.
This website you speak of, have they actually TRIED all these fitiments on the 5ktq. I doubt it. THey just compute what will give you the same offset and size. They dont know that by moving to the 225 you run into fender rubbing problems and/or tie rod rubbing problems. Fix one and the other is a problem. Only way to fix is to fix the problem in back with proper offset and fix front with spacers.
After you have done it then come talk. I've dont all the reading and speaking with the people that acutally make the wheels and tires. Catch up.
G'day
Todd (Tired of type 44 tire fitiment threads that always end in the same place, with people insisting it will work till they try mounting them and then crying to the list because they just spent $1,500+ on stuff that dont work, 5 years on the list and I've never seen it work. Please, anyone BTDT, I would LOVE to see it)

Todd, wtf are you talking about. (1st) I said nothing about fitting
225's on 17's on the type 44. (2nd) I stated 215 40/45 on 17's and 215
40's on 18's. (3rd) Both 17 & 18's are on 7.5 in wheels. (4th) I
studied from a well known and respected business website that
specializes in rims, tires, springs, & struts, they also have an 800 #
so you can call them and they have stores throughout the U.S. (5th) The
web link I provided gives the correct rim offset for any wheel size you
want and gives you the correct tire fitment (6th) Instead of telling ppl
to go study, try taking time to read 1st, then gather facts, then post.

Sure I belive you can fit a 215/40-18. Should fit with no problems. Its a 225/45-17 that wont fit. that is the proper fitiment size for a 17" wheel for that car and it WONT fit without different offsets front to back or fender rolling on a 7.5" wheel. Fact. Many have tried it, none successfully to my knowledge. YOu talking about 215-40 and 215-45 tires. They are smaller in Diameter and width. Probably a 7" rim as well. Its not the rim Diameter that matters. Whether its a 16, 17, r 18" wheel doesn't matter. Its the offset and width of wheel and tire that matter. In theory the 215/40-18 wont take up any more room than the 215/45-17. Offsets and wheel width being the same.
Study up a bit more. I dont care what your tire calculator says, what looks good on paper doesnt always work. I urge you, try it. Go by some ET 45 17 or 18" wheels and put 225/45's or 225/40's (respectively) on there and then tell me they fit.

The rim isn't the problem, it's the tire size ppl want to use. 215/40
17, 215/45 17 both will fit under the fenders of the type 44. Also
215/40 18, yep 18's , on a 18 in rim though. Don't believe it? Click
here www.tires.com/sc then perform a rim/tire search on your model.
They also give you he correct off set when you search.

BTW,
This problem with rear fender rubbing is for the 5ktq / 200 only. The V8 has no problem with its flared fenders. I've seen 245's mounted on one and I think I even saw 255's once but it was really pushing it FWIW.
Thanks for the chat. Oh, what Golf did you have and what size rubber did you run on it? I have a friend with a Jetta II that we are 1/2 way through putting in the Motronic 2.0 liter from a Jetta III into it. Should make for a good daily driver when done. Just curious what your suspension and wheel/tire experience is with that car.

I understand that. I agree, you might need spacers depending on the wheels. And don't worry, I wasn't offended, but thanks for asking. : )
Todd Phenneger wrote:
Yea, abut diameter isn't the problem. Of course 17" wil fit in Theory. A 225/45-17 is available which makes it possible. But 225's dont fit. Thats the problem. In some 15" sizes they do but in 17" for some reason it doens't work. The shorter sidewall and 7.5" wheels most people use push it in a little more and make it rub in front or in back. One of the two. Which makes spacers necessary. What I was saying was that you cant say a tire fits a totally different car because it fits yours. THey are not the same and dont share one suspension or body fender component.
Sorry if it sounded like I was flaming you. Didn't mean to.

Yes, but the rear fender plays no part in that. The outside diameter is no different on the 17" then on the 15".
And there are probably about 2000 parts that are identical on the Golf and the 5k, so I see a ton of similarities.
Todd Phenneger wrote:
And just WHAT relation is there to a Golf and a 5ktq. None that I can see. Just because it works on your Golf or V8 doesnt mean it will on a 5ktq. The rear fenders cause great problems fitting large tires. That said, if you use spacers in front a 225/45-17 WILL fit with No fender rolling or grinding. BTDT. But it Wont work with the same offset front to back. IE...with a 45mm offset it is close and MAY work up front. Better to go about 40mm. And a 45mm Offset or 40mm offset will rub majorly in the rear. But a 50mm offset works well back there. Some have run 225's on a 45 offset in back but with 17's it seems to not work well without rolling the fenders. On a V8 you can run 245's just fine, but not a 5ktq.
If you cant go with custom built 17's (expensive) then you can look at going with a 215/45-17 like Theron suggests and that (I would guess) will clear with a 45 offset wheel. But you MAY have to run max Neg Camber settings in back. (Still staying within alignment specs of course)
Just sharing my experience and what I've read on the list. But we could NOT fit 225's on 17's with 45 offset and had to go more offset in back and less in front. a 6mm spacer or 8mm spacer seemed to work.

You shouldn't have any problems fitting 17". If I could do it on my golf, you
definately can on the 5k. Probably like a 225/40-17, or a 215/45-17 would work
great. Just double check your offset, but if the rims have the wrong offset,
spacers can be safely used. Check out some of these sights:

I hope this helps. I also have a tire size conversion chart in xls (Excel)
format if you want to properly plus size tires. It gives you circumfrence and
RPM divergence.
