Good story Mike.

My best effort in the world of phantom problems was trying to sort out why
the fan in my fan oven wasn't working.  I took the whole thing out of the
cabinet, took it to pieces and went fault finding with my multimeter.  I
eventually traced the break in the circuit to a microswitch attached to the
door hinge.  There was nothing wrong with the switch - it was doing its job
perfectly of switching off the fan whenever the door was open (which
happened to be when I was looking at it), and starting it up again when the
door was closed.

I used to be confused about fridge lights too!
