audi 200tq 89 air filter change

Recently bought Audi 200tq 89. I am doing major
 checking/maintanence of cooling system and pressure/vacume hoses.
 I want to change air filter as well and here is my problem. How to do
it?!!!!!
I took out air intake elbow, metal pipe from air intake boot 
to turbo is out. I can take out air filter cover!!! 
Restrictions: from engine side O2 sensor, windshield washing liquid tank
from the front, heat shild from the rear side, intake boot from the
 top. I can't believe I have to take out one of these to change air 
filter! And what exactly?

Help, please.
