Thanks for the suggestions for curing my '87 4kq's unstable idle on
start-up. I cleaned the ISV with carb cleaner (that is some nasty
stuff! I should have worn gloves) and now the oscillation is very close
to gone. I suppose I might need to get a new ISV for a complete cure,
but for now anyway it works just fine. I also bought a $35 O2 sensor I
intend to install when I figure out how to get a wrench on the old one.
I will also check the other sensor and switch suggested by Tony Lum,
thanks for the nice clear message Tony. I thought this idle business
would be better covered in the archives, but had little success finding
anything. So thanks for the help, one of these days I figure I will be
on the other end of this exchange of ideas.

ps if my messages are in some format that is hard to read for someone
