Transmission

Its the transmission - ask the dealer why they didn't run the
diagnostics on it with a VAG 1551. The transmission ECU can store codes
that can be read out. All 5 solenoid valves can be tested. You could
have something as simple as a bad solenoid valve, or as nasty as a bad
pump or torque converter. Did the fluid look good? Have you ever seen
all the lights (at once) on the gear indicator in the instrument cluster
light up or flash?
Find a transmission shop that does BMW transmissions and ask them if
they are intimately familiar with a ZF HP24. The Audi V8 is an HP24A -
the A being the designation for AWD.
