Ahh.  I see, different failure mode.  The 944 unit fails in the 
motor; coolant from the  core drips into the motor, causing the 
rotor's core and the magnet to rust so badly that eventually the two 
almost rust together...or at least tight enough to stop it.  The 
position sensor slider also got all gunked up...

Maybe regularly overhauling the valve on the other end, along with a 
little lube in the cable, would keep gears from getting chewed?
