88` 80q heating problems

Hey folks, my first winter with this car.  Can drive 30 miles and the heater 
never gets warm, slight smell of radiator fluid in driving compartment, and 
foggy windows. I was wondering if I should change the thermostat first, and 
if the heater core does need replacing, does the evaporator have to come out 
to get to the heater core.  Any btdts would be nice before I start this 
weekend project.
