Welcome and congratulations on your new car! First off, try not to be
too intimidated by the car's complexity if you are indeed an "adamant
diy'er" as there is no other way any sane person could provide all the
$$ required for an aging Type $$ (er 44) turbo quattro's care and
feeding IMNSHO. Much of what I have had to do to my car (1987
5kcstq...not too unlike yours) is undoing and redoing what so-called
"professional mechanics" did to my car for the PO. I find that most
routine maintenance (and more importantly some serious troubleshooting
at times) is not all that tough with the help from friends here on this
list, a Bentley manual, and a decent assortment of tools (sometimes a
deep wallet for parts helps too...).
You are wise to go get it checked by a local mechanic whom you can trust
to get the ball rolling...but do buy a Bentley, stay plugged in to this
list, do be sure to check out Scott Mockry's excellent site
(http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/) as there is no better resource for
troubleshooting info around (and the safety page is quite humorous too).
Depending on what part of the Bay Area you live in would dictate the
recommendation but M&M in Campbell, Brazil in San Jose, Wolfsport and
Griffen Autowerks in Berkeley all supposedly do good work (but I have
personally no experience with any of these so YMMV). This link may help
too: http://www.audifans.com/new/mechanic.html (Nice job BTW to the
Audifans development team!)
See you around the Bay Area and welcome!
