Well Joseph, your experience does not match that of my mechanic, in part.
The TAP "chip" is really a resistor mod that everyone slags, that's why
the boost isn't reported correctly on the gauge. As for pinging, I'm
happy your car doesn't ping. My mechanic's 5ktq pings and he's not happy
w/ his chip, although he's sold several of these chips to customers who
have no problems, so it may be car-specific.
It really annoys me to not have the gauge working correctly and TAP's
method of chipping the car just isn't right, even though it works.
My mechanic's car also exhibits this boost spike on lift-throttle, which
evidences a need for a bypass valve, IIRC. Have you thought of installing
a bypass valve? That may fix your boost spike problem.
