thanks jorgen,  the said screw is located under a brass coloured metal cap,
30 seconds with a screwdriver and the cap was history.  the screw was then
visible 1.5 to 1.75 turns in and i refitted it,  a test drive showed
remarkable improvement, the only stumbling is very minor in 5th gear pulling
from 1250rpm, at high revs it is a bit flatter, but i put that down to
reconnecting the vacuum hose, tomorrow im going for .25 turns in and see if
it gets better.
