Tailgate/ cargo light issues...

regarding the opened tailgate / lights not coming on thread...

could the lights be activated by a mercury (position sensing) switch inside 
the gate ? thus not visible in the jamb area. perhaps no longer working/ 
lost contact accounting for the interior light inop.

just a thought...
