90 v8 trans. help-Advice

trans. was fine before going into shop for new starter and ring gear because 
of a hard start problem. After work was performed trans. now slips. Any ideas 
from list on were to start checking? I am thinking of buying this car, its in 
real nice shape, price seems fair @2000.00 with 114,000 miles on odo. Spent 
all morning in archives,  some help there, found how to pull codes from 
sjm.fantastic site but i'm not sure what im looking for when i run output 
test. Shop owner said he put a VAG on it in hopes of being able to reprogram 
the comp., but he thinks trans. needs to be replaced. Hmm. ANY IDEAS. anybody?
How about rebuilding or should i try and find a used on? or am I a glutton 
for punishment? So far so good with my 86tq, so so with the 89tq. 
Any ideas greatly ap.
