Assuming it was refilled correctly and working properly beforehand, the key items
to try would be to remove, clean and apply Stabilant 22 to the connectors for the
multifunction switch (side of trans) and the 8 pin connector at the rear of the
trans. The dealer should know this - there are service bulletins on electrical
connection problems for this trans and all of the later units up to todays models.
My bet would be on the 8 pin connector in the back - as this provides power and
control for the 5 electrical solenoids that determine shifting. I would also
verify the correct alignment of the multifunction switch on the side of the trans
- the procedure is quite simple and there are some pretty strong service bulletins
on this.
After that, they should put the VAG 1551 on the car and check the trans ECU codes
again, then do the diagnostics on the solenoids.
Find yourself a good trans mechanic with BMW/Mercedes experience that knows the ZF
HP24 trans inside and out. If the price is that low - $2K, chances are the trans
had problems beforehand. If you can't find a good trans mechanic locally,
Autosports Unlimited in Michigan has the best prices on rebuilt and used
transmissions.
Did you have them replace the fuel pressure regulator - that probably caused your
ring gear problem...
