I used to average 28 mpg with a 5000 2.3 10v. Auto will give less mpg
though and it depends how often you do 100mph.

I think these roofs have a 2 speed motor (starts slow then speeds up) this
is controlled by microswitches that can fail. I altered mine so it ran at
one speed difficult to explain how I did it. 
Lube the tracks though.

2 of my Audis were as you described and idled poorly but when I drove off
it cleared up straight away. It may be vapour lock in the injector pipes.

Amazon sells Haynes manuals and Bentley the latter being more concise but
at a price.
