How to replace the evaporator thermostat in a 88 5K CSTQW?

Hi folks,

Trying to get my AC working on my 88 5K CSTQW... I found that my evaportor
thermostat is kaputt, I could short the 2 green wire leads and get the
compressor to kick in, this is how I got my cool air all summer, but this
problem is the compressor is on all the time, can't be good for it. I can
manually turn the AC on/off as I need it, but my wife can't seem to
remember what to do and she hates it.

How do I replace this thermostat? will all the freon leak out?????

I searched to archive and SJM page with no luck.
