The messages in the trip odometer are not faults. They are simply
service reminders, and there are several classes of them, 'OIL',
'IN 1', 'IN 2', etc. If it were an actual fault, the 'check engine'
indicator (the engine symbol with a lightning bolt) in your instrument
cluster would come on.
The dealer can reset the service reminder using their VAG 1551/1552
scantool (or equivalent; such as a PC with an appropriate adapter cable
and software). Since you have a 98 model, you can try the procedure
outlined on this web site to clear the service reminder yourself:
http://www.audiworld.com/faq/faq_elec/000728e.shtml
Note that this procedure only works in post-97 Audis. The VAG 1551/1552
is required for earlier models with the service reminder feature in the
odometer.
