Personally, I do both, depending on time available,
permanence of connection, environment of connection,
etc. Constant is proper sized shrink sleeves. These
really seal any connection well, both electrically and
from the environment. For crimps I use the
non-insulated barrel crimps. You can get them at
Radio Shack or even better at an electronic supply
house. About 10 for $1. These are both cheaper and
sized better to wire gauges. I really don't like the
way the pre-insulated connectors ends open. It's an
invitation for corrosion. Also the W-crimp or 2 stage
crimping pliers make really strong, factory looking
connections. If the environment is really nasty, like
the alternator blue wire or the starter trigger, I'll
use a double shrink sleeve with as long a pieces as I
can get on the wire.
