intermittant code 2111 (RPM Sensor)....

I have been noticing over the past 2 or 3 long (>75) mile trips, my "check
engine" light (really the seatbelt warning light.. but that IS my check
engine light ;-) ) sometimes would blink on faintly or stay on for a few
seconds and then go out on my 4ktq.. sometimes when running at a constant
speed or sometimes when accelerating hard. Nothing appears wrong with the
car EXCEPT for one time last week when this happened and I suddenly lost
power in the high speed lane on the highway.. A quick dive over to the
breakdown lane assuming the worst and I tried restarting the car and it
fired right back to life with no other indication of a problem for the rest
of the trip. That's the only time the car has died in conjunction with the
light flashing. Well, I had always forgot to run the ECU code dump after
these long trips since my MAC11B doesn't have a non-volatile code storage
feature like the later ECU's.. so today I finally did and I got 2111. I
understand from SJM's website that this is the RPM sensor and can be either
a loose connection (don't think so) OR metal shavings on the flywheel..
(maybe???). I'm wondering what could cause such a thing? Has anyone else
had such an "intermittant" problem without a very frequent running problem
associated with it? I would almost expect the car to die immediately every
time this might happen but this doesn't appear to be the case.... I'll pull
the sensor tommorow to see if there is anything obviously amiss.
Thanks!
