Infocom's released versions of Zork I-III were made freeware by Activision
about 4 years or so ago. They can all be downloaded at Activision's site,
appropriately named http://www.activision.com
To get to it, either search, or go to the Genre/Adventure/Zork menu on the
left and somewhere in the "Lobby", you'll find it.
For the impatient, go
to: http://www.activision.com/games/zgi/atrium/gameroom/zorkuu.zip
For the PC, that is. Like I mentioned, the game scripts can be downloaded
elsewhere and players for any, and I mean _any_, platform can be found.
Then there's "Dungeon", which was the mainframe precursor to Zork that was
developed at MIT. Dungeon was the big game that Infocom split up into
Zorks I-III (but not all of the rooms and puzzles are in Dungeon because
they added more stuff for the commercial release.) Although it's in some
dispute, Dungeon is generally considered to be public domain.
On yet another tangent, Douglas Adams got the copyright back to
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and he's made the game freeware as well.
All of the other Infocom games are still technically commercial, although
they're difficult to buy.
Now, for those still with me - anyone want to help out and create a text
adventure based around quattros? Har har.
