I good way to check the functionality of your fuel distributor is to
unbolt it from the air-flow meter and see if the small metal rod on the
bottom side of the fuel dis. moves up an down freely. If you push it in
to the dis. it should come back out rather easily.  If it does not move
easily that could be the case.  You can probably find a used one at Audi
dismantler for around a tenth the cost of a new one.

.........I think it's shot. The car won't go over 3000rpm and does a no
start after being run a while, although the pressure gauge says its
fine. A new one from THE WIZARD OF AUD is over a grand.....
