The oil is probably bulking up because it's being foamed.  Pull a sample
out when the reservoir is 'full' and see if it's really oil foam rather
than oil.  If so, probably the pump - although I've seen remarkable
relief from this problem simply by washing out the filter in the
reservoir.  Use any degreasing agent, then water, then dry it thoroughly.
