Ditch CIS?

I saw exactly these symptoms a few months back.  YMMV, but in the case
I saw it turned out to be an air leak.

In our case, the wiring harness bundle that kind of turns back on itself
towards the rear of the engine block (under the crankcase breather pipe)
had been rotated such that it bore directly on the breather pipe.  It had
worn quite a large hole in the hose, but normally blocked it.  Specific
manouvres caused the pipe to move away and open the breather system to
air, stalling the engine.  The car was almost undriveable until the hose
settled back in position, resealing the hole.

In this case, even the radiator fan running on #3 level could move the
hose.
