VW question

I know, I know...this is an Audi forum, but VW IS their parent company, so
here goes.

I was working on this 89 Jetta Digifant last night for 4 hours trying to
change out the friggin fuel regulator. The car didn't leak gas anymore after
that, but it was still running rough i.e. missing strangely. I checked the
plugs/cap/rotor/wires/FI operation and I noticed 2 things. Cylinder # 2
looked wet to me. That is, the piston seemed either oily or covered in gas.
Second, the rotor housing was on backward! I couldn't believe it, so I
checked it with a neighbors' 90, and sure enough the Hall sensor was on the
lower left instead of the upper right. I tried switching the wires to
normal, but then it wouldn't start. The lady said some mechanic did that
because it wouldn't go on the other way (???). Any ideas? She was kindof a
witch, so I really don't care to work on it anymore, but this is to satisfy
my own massive curiosity...
